The results were surprisingly close:

  • Asking the right questions — 33%
  • Selling yourself confidently — 31%
  • Answering tricky questions — 20%

And honestly — it makes sense.

We often talk about how to answer questions well, but rarely about the importance of what you ask during an interview. Great questions show confidence, curiosity, and genuine interest — all things hiring managers remember.

Here’s why asking the right questions matters, and how to master it for your next opportunity.

Why Asking Questions Matters So Much

  • “Can you describe some of the immediate priorities for this position?”

These help you understand dynamics, ways of working, and communication styles.

  • “How would you describe the team culture?”
  • “What skills or qualities do top performers on this team share?”

3. Questions About Expectations & Growth

Interviewers love when candidates think long-term.

  • “How do you support development and progression within the team?”
  • “What opportunities might open up after this role?”

4. Questions That Show Strategic Thinking

These highlight curiosity and initiative.

  • “What challenges or opportunities do you foresee for this function in the next year?”
  • “How does this role contribute to wider business objectives?”

 5. Questions That Assess Culture & Fit

Remember — you’re interviewing them, too.

  • “How would you describe the company culture in one sentence?”
  • “How do you support work–life balance across the organisation?”
Final Tip: Always Have 2–3 Questions Ready

Even if some get answered naturally during the conversation, you’ll still have something meaningful to ask. It shows professionalism and preparation — traits every employer values.
