Java Developer – Public Sector Project
Location: Remote (with travel to Telford twice per month)
Clearance: BPSS required
Contract Length: 6 months
Rate: £550 per day (Inside IR35)
Overview
We are seeking an experienced Java Developer to join a high-impact public sector programme supporting a critical UK government service. This role offers the opportunity to work on large-scale systems within a complex and highly regulated environment, contributing to services that impact millions of users across the UK.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain Java-based applications using Spring Boot
- Support and enhance batch-based and scheduled processing systems
- Diagnose and resolve issues across application, database, and integration layers
- Collaborate within controlled release environments using Git
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable and scalable solutions
Core Skills & Experience
- Strong Java development experience, particularly with Spring Boot
- Solid SQL expertise, including PL/SQL or equivalent procedural database languages
- Experience working with batch processing and scheduling tools (e.g. CRON, TWS)
- Proven ability to troubleshoot across full technology stacks
- Experience working in Unix/Linux environments
- Familiarity with version control and structured release processes
Desirable Experience
- Background in large-scale, enterprise, or regulated environments
- Exposure to legacy system modernisation programmes
- Previous experience within public sector or government environments
- Active or prior security clearance is advantageous but not essential
Additional Information
This is a hands-on development role requiring strong technical capability, alongside an understanding of legacy environments. The systems involved rely heavily on batch processing, typical of large organisations, and differ from event-driven microservices commonly seen in financial services or modern cloud-native environments.
